अध्यापक द्वारा कक्षा में गणित की परीक्षा ली गई। परीक्षा लेने से पहले उन्होंने सभी विद्यार्थियों से कहा, “जो विद्यार्थी सबसे अधिक अंक प्राप्त करेगा उसे पुरस्कार दिया जाएगा।” परीक्षा में केवल एक ही प्रश्न दिया गया। सभी विद्यार्थी उस प्रश्न को हल करने और पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने में जुट गये। लेकिन प्रश्न अत्यंत कठिन था, सरलता से हल नहीं किया जा सकता था। सभी विद्यार्थी जी जान से जुटे हुए थे। बहुत समय तक कोई भी विद्यार्थी उस प्रश्न को हल नहीं कर सका। अंत में एक बालक प्रश्न हल करके अध्यापक के सामने पहुँचा। अध्यापक महोदय ने प्रश्न और उसका हल देखा और पाया कि हल सही है।

उन्होंने इन्तजार किया कि शायद अन्य कोई विद्यार्थी भी सही हल निकाल कर ले आए, किन्तु देर तक कोई भी विद्यार्थी सही हल नहीं निकाल सका। समय पूरा हो चुका था। अध्यापक महोदय ने सही हल निकालकर लाने वाले को पुरस्कार दिया। पुरस्कार – प्राप्त विद्यार्थी नाचते गाते खुशी से झूमते अपने घर पहुँचा। दूसरे सभी विद्यार्थी हैरान थे कि यह लड़का सही हल कैसे निकाल सका, क्योंकि पढ़ने – लिखने में वह बालक मंदबुद्धि था।

अगले दिन अध्यापक महोदय ज्यों ही कक्षा में आए, त्यों ही पुरस्कार – प्राप्त विद्यार्थी लपक कर उनके चरणों से लिपट गया और फूट – फूट कर रोने लगा। सभी विद्यार्थी और अध्यापक हैरान थे कि इसे क्या हो गया है। अध्यापक ने उससे पूछा, “क्या बात हैं तुम रोते क्यों हो ? तुम्हें तो खुश होना चाहिए कि पुरस्कार प्राप्त करके तुमने अच्छा विद्यार्थी होने का प्रमाण दिया है। ” वह बालक रोते हुए बोला, “आप यह पुरस्कार वापस ले लिजीए श्रीमान !” “पर क्यों ?” अध्यापक ने पूछा। “इसलिए कि मैं इस पुरस्कार का अधिकारी नहीं हूँ। मैंने पुस्तक में से देखकर, चोरी करके प्रश्न सही हल निकाला था। मैंने अपनी योग्यता से सही हल नहीं निकाला था। 

आप यह पुरस्कार वापस ले लीजिए और मेरी भूल के लिए मुझे क्षमा कर दीजिए। भविष्य में मैं ऐसी गलती कभी दोबारा नहीं करूँगा, बालक ने कहा।” अध्यापक ने उसे वापस बुलाकर कहा, “सही हल तुम्हें नहीं आया, लेकिन धोखा देना भी तुम्हें नहीं आता। धोखा देना और चोरी करना तुम्हारा स्वभाव नहीं है, इसलिए कल घर जाने के बाद तुम्हारा मन दुखी रहा और तुमने सही बात कह डाली। तुमने सही हल नही निकाला मुझे इसका दुःख नहीं है, पर तुमने सही बात कह डाली, उसकी मुझे बहुत खुशी है। गलती मान लेने वाले बालक बड़े होकर बड़ा नाम और काम करते है।” आगे चलकर यह बालक न्यायमूर्ति गोपाल कृष्ण गोखले के नाम से जाना गया।

 The teacher took a math test in the classroom.  Before taking the exam, he told all the students, "The student who gets the highest marks will be awarded."  Only one question was given in the exam.  All the students started solving that question and getting the award.  But the question was extremely difficult, could not be solved easily.  All the students were busy with life.  For a long time no student could solve that question.  At the end, a child solved the question and reached in front of the teacher.  Teacher saw the question and its solution and found that the solution is correct.

 He waited that perhaps any other student could also come up with the right solution, but for a long time no student could find the right solution.  The time was over.  The teacher gave the prize to the one who found the right solution.  The award-winning student reached his home swinging happily singing and dancing.  All the other students were surprised how this boy could find the right solution, because the child was retarded in reading and writing.

 The next day, as soon as the teacher came in the classroom, the award-winning student jumped up and clung to his feet and started crying bitterly.  All the students and teachers were surprised what has happened to it.  The teacher asked him, "What's the matter, why do you cry?"  You should be happy that you have given proof of being a good student by receiving the award.  The boy said crying, "Take back this award sir!"  "but why ?"  The teacher asked.  "Because I do not deserve this award.  I had solved the question by stealing from the book.  I did not find the right solution from my ability.

 You take this prize back and forgive me for my mistake.  In future I will never make such a mistake again, the child said. "  The teacher called him back and said, "You didn't know the right solution, but you don't know how to cheat."  It is not your nature to cheat and steal, so after going home yesterday, your heart was sad and you said the right thing.  You have not found the right solution, I am not sad about it, but you have said the right thing, I am very happy about it.  Children who accept mistakes make big names and work. "  Later, this child became known as Justice Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
